Mickey D honoured with TT corner
There are over 200 corners on the Isle of Man Mountain course. Now Michael Dunlop has one named after him…
Michael Dunlop became the most successful TT racer of all time at last year’s Isle of Man TT Races, winning four races to overtake his uncle Joey’s 30-year record of 26 TT victories. Having won 29 of his 87 TT starts, the 36-year-old is statistically the greatest TT racer of all time.
Now, in honour of his record breaking 27th victory, a previously unnamed left hand corner on the approach to the 27th milestone has been named ‘MD’s’.
The modest Ulsterman joins TT royalty Giacomo Agostini, Mike Hailwood and John McGuinness in having a corner permanently named after him. Uncle Joey, who died at the age of 52 in a 125cc road race in Estonia less than a month after winning his final three TTs in 2000, is also honoured with ‘Joey’s’ corner – to be found a mile before MD’s.
Michael, whose father Robert was also a five-time TT winner, paid tribute to his uncle, saying: “I’ve said plenty of times since matching and passing [Joey’s] record that records are there to be broken and they will be broken again. But for me, it has always been important that the Dunlop name continues on at the top of the sport, and for it to be a Dunlop that takes things to that next level.
“It is a real, genuine, honour to have this happen and it’s something I’m really proud of. Anyone that knows me will know how important history and legacy is to me. I’m definitely not one for the attention, and I think everyone knows I don’t really enjoy the spotlight, but to be recognised in this way is special and means a great deal to me.
I’ve still got plenty of wins in me yet, who knows where I’ll get to in that respect, but to know that this corner is here and will always be here – it’s a real privilege.”
Michael will be expected to extend his record at TT 2025, which starts next week. As well as his 29 wins, MD holds a host of other TT records and milestones. He is the first rider to post a 130mph lap on a supersport machine and has won TTs with a record breaking six manufacturers (BMW, Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki, Kawasaki and Paton) and with a switch to Ducati for this year’s Supersport TTs, may well extend his record to seven.
We can’t wait to see history unfold at the 2025 Isle of Man TT races!
